A great go to guide!

The book was just what I was looking for. I'm a DIY kinda guy so this was right up my alley. It touches base with every aspect of the vehicle especially the B15 Sentras. It goes into enough depth and detail that's easy to understand and leads to further examination of your ride. I own a 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V and I enjoyed the information specifically for it.

I recommend this book to those that are just getting into autocross or straight line racing. It's a great reference point that snowballs into further research.

Exellent Guidline for tuning NIssan Sport Compacts

Combined with a factory service manual, this book was obviously written to be informative and provide tuning guidance, and not step by step processes, which it does effectively.

With regards to the book pointing to the "FSM", a person modifying a modern car would be insane to not own a Factory Service Manual.

While the engine performance modifications may not agree with some of the other reviewers, the turbocharger is the equalizer for sport compacts when compared to big displacement engines, which is my primary area of interest. However, the book covers tuning aspects from bumper to bumper, from suspension to driveline to body modifications.

A final thought, as one reviewer mentioned, Nissan Sport Compacts DO NOT receive the aftermarket support that Honda does. Knowing which manufacturers of quality parts to pick from is half the game, and the book points them out effectively.

No brainer for the price.

Great book with huge wealth of information!

If you own the cars or engines mentioned in this book, buy it. It has great information and really tells you what NOT to do along with what should be done properly.

It will not tell you what to step-by-step. That the dumbest answer I read for reviews for this book. Nothing will be step-by-step, you gotta get your hands dirty and use your brain to think some before you start wrenching on a car.

Sarah's book really helps the beginners with engine processes and goes deep into turbo adds and engine swaps, suspension, everything. The book is great, go do yourself a favor and buy it if you own an engine or car mentioned in this book. You won't regret it!

Kirk D. Hagen is a professor of engineering at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, where he has taught since 1993. He did his undergraduate work in physics and earned his PhD in mechanical engineering at the University of Utah. His areas of specialization are thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer. Congratulations, Mayor!

This was about the 50th book I have read written by people who have hiked the long distance trails both here and abroad., and it has soared to the top of my favorites. Unlike so many that were mere chronicles of fellow hikers, stops and meals, this author made the journey complete with his emotions concerning the enchantment and the hardships he faced daily. The reader could sense throughout how the trail was molding him into someone he never dreamed he could be. I am not, nor can I be, a hiker. I am a 74 year old woman confined to a wheelchair who lives the hikes of others vicariously. This was an exceptional journey that affected me profoundly, and I hope that Mayor will achieve his goals of hiking the PCT and the ADT, and I hope that he will invite me along via new books about them.

Great read. Thoroughly enjoyed entire book. Hats off to the author. The guy is a beast! The book gave an excellent representation of what to expect taking on this massive endeavor. His writing doesn't drone on; it is easy to follow and wonderfully discriptive. The only aspect I would change is to leave out the unnecessary "F-bombs". I say this not as a prude. Rather it would be more acceptable for younger readers looking for inspiration and adventure.

I enjoyed this book for lots of reasons

I enjoyed this book for lots of reasons. I was firstly attracted to the topic of the Appalachian Trail because we moved a lot when I was a kid and we lived very near the trail at two different times. I visited a portion of it when I was 8 and later when I was 10. Later in life, I worked with the father of the author and met Kyle as a small boy. I moved away to Germany and heard about his blog. Unfortunately, due to the work pressures at the time, I only followed it sporadically. When I found out Kyle had put together a book about his hike, I had to read it.

I found the book to be a very good read and I enjoyed it immensely. It was surprising and rewarding to see that at a very early age he had discovered many of the same things that took me over 50 years to realize.

I can highly recommend this book to those who ever wished at some point they had taken the other path – and also to those contemplating undertaking any significant challenge in their lives. As it appears young Kyle has learned, it’s not only about the trail.

Difficult answers make for difficult books

This book takes a hard look at all the questions you might have from life, and attempts to provide a concise and rational answer to the difficult questions. At times it's too rational, and will take a completely objective standpoint versus a politically correct one, so Dr. Stamos' writing won't appease everyone. Overall, it's a good book to get you started on thinking objectively about evolution and its importance in science.

Evolutionary psychology from a philosopher's point of view

There are nine chapters dealing in turn with knowledge, consciousness, language, sex, feminism, race ethics, religion, and the meaning of life. Professor Stamos is a philosopher as well as an expert on biological evolution as can be seen from the choices he makes on which to focus. Most evolutionary biologists would not focus on epistemology, for example, as Stamos does in the first chapter, nor would they suppose that somehow evolutionary biology could help us to find an answer to the meaning of life. But it is at the heart of Stamos's endeavor to show how evolutionary biology and the relatively new science of evolutionary psychology can at least give us a new perspective on some of these ancient questions.

The bête noir of the book is the Standard Social Science Model (SSSM) which Stamos finds not only inadequate but so riddled with politically correct and socially correct notions that it needs to be set aside. That the SSSM still holds sway in the humanities and social science departments in many of our colleges and universities is a testament to how far we haven't come. In chapter after chapter Stamos takes issue with the SSSM, applies ideas and knowledge from evolutionary biology and comes up with not only new perspectives, but in some cases enough evidence and rationale to destroy cherished conclusions. Particularly startling and revolutionary are what evo psych has taught us about religion, sex, consciousness, ethics and morality.

Some quick examples: In the case of religion, evolutionary biology has demolished the argument from design (creationists and Intelligent Designers notwithstanding). In ethics and morality we now know that morality does not come from religion but from the very nature of the beast--ourselves. The question of consciousness can be shown to be a product (or byproduct) of the evolutionary process depending on how it is understood or defined. As for sex, we now know, thanks to evolutionary psychology, that men and women have differing strategies which lead to differing behavior patterns, such as males seeking lots of reproductive tries while women try to find a male with resources. Stamos shows that the radical feminist model which claims that there are no significant sexual differences, that human behavioral differences are due to socially constructed gender roles, is mostly mistaken.

If you doubt any of this or are new to evolutionary psychology, I strongly suggest you read this exciting and surprisingly readable book. It will be an eye opener. It is clearly one of the best on the subject that I have read, and I've read dozens. Stamos is by temperament a teacher and has aimed the book at college undergraduates and a general, educated readership. His technique is to show how findings or implications from evolutionary biology relate to the big questions and then to consider objections from both experts and non-experts, contemporary and historical; and then to find a consensus or to show why there is no consensus. He is not shy about disagreeing with the heavyweights in biology or other fields nor does he mince words when taking the mistaken to task. He has the courage of his convictions and isn't afraid to criticize sacred cows. He has little patience with the kind of political correctness that leads to falsehoods. He believes in scientific truth as far as it goes and denigrates the scientific relativity of postmodernism. He is passionate and very well informed. I found the entire book fascinating, although a bit obtuse in parts. (But of course that may point to a failing on my part!)

Stamos is thorough about references, using footnotes and citing opuses, while being clear when he is giving his own opinion. His 17-page bibliography ("References") is an excellent source for further reading from which he has culled some very nice quotes as well as some telling interpretations. For example here is how he explains the official position of the US National Academy of Sciences that religion and science are compatible--a position that Stamos finds untenable: He employs William Provine, who "suspects 'intellectual dishonesty,' [is at work] just as every member of the Congress of the United States professes to be deeply religious but surely is not. What is behind it all, says Provine, is politics motivated by the fear of a public uproar if the truth be told, votes in the case of politicians, public funding in the case of scientists." (pp. 217-218)

I think that is exactly right.

And here is Stamos on human caused pollution and destruction of habitat: "...many ecologists view the human species not as the pinnacle of evolutionary progress but as a cancerous growth or parasite, one that is destroying its host, the biosphere." (p. 217; he credits Eugene P. Odum and William H. McNeill for this metaphorical point of view.)

Stamos even goes so far as to argue against free will in humans. He reminds us of the famous experiment by Benjamin Libet which showed that when people make a conscious decision to do something, such as lift a finger, they do so half a second after the neural activity correlated with the willing takes place. (p. 49) We have the illusion that we are making decisions, and we live happily in our ignorance. The illusion of being in charge is part of what consciousness is all about. Stamos asks, what does consciousness do? How is it adaptive? If it gives us the illusion of being in charge, perhaps that in itself is adaptive. Someone who feels he has no say in something, who feels his efforts have no importance, who feels he is at the mercy of things he can't control may not be as effective in dealing with the environment as the man who feels that he is in charge--even if that feeling is an illusion.

Excellent Overview

I've taken several courses with professor Stamos and adore his teaching style. His belief that philosophy suffers if entirely divorced from science, his affirmation of proper reasoning and logic and his coherent teaching style makes him, honestly, one of the best professors I've ever had. Sadly, I know longer go to York U (I may be going back for grad school :D) so I can no longer take courses with Stamos, so I decided to pick up his latest book hoping his writing style would be reflective of his teaching style. After reading Evolution and the Big Questions, my respect for Stamos has been reaffirmed. It is clear, it gets to the point and offers many evolutionary viewpoints on the subjects at hand (which include Religion, Knowledge, Sexuality and Race). What I love about it most though is that it is not only a collection of viewpoints on philosophical questions from an evolutionary point of view, but Stamos makes his own arguments and lets his own points of view become known. He is very well read in the subject of evolution and this becomes very clear while reading. The book even has an appendix at the end clarifying often misunderstood concepts in evolution as well as a glossary of terms for those not as versed in evolution. You do not need to be an expert in philosophy or evolutionary biology to enjoy this book. It is as clear and understandable as his lectures and definitely worth getting. I'm also excited for his next work on the subject of the myth of innate human rights. I've seen him give his presentation on it in person (I believe it's on YouTube as well) and he presents many novel ideas and makes some very interesting arguments. Stamos is also part of the reason why I want to pursue a career as a philosophy professor. I know I may sound like I am glorifying him, but he really is a great professor and I hope I can be taught by him again if I head back to York for grad school.

About the Author
Milan Sonka is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Iowa. His research interests include medical image analysis, computer-aided diagnosis, and machine vision.

Vaclav Hlavac is Professor of Cybernetics at the Czech Technical University, Prague. his research interests are knowledge based image analysis, 3D model-based vision and relations between statistical and structural pattern recognition.

Great comprehensive reference, bad as a textbook

I really love this book as far as having many algorithms in the area of image analysis and computer vision spelled out in both mathematical terms and algorithmic steps. Just about every subsection of the book has the format of mathematical equations that perform a particular vision task followed by the algorithm in numbered steps and accompanied by very good figures. What is lacking is any explanation on what is going on as well as a "big picture" viewpoint - why would you want to perform this transform in the first place? For those of us who know the whys and just need the hows, this is a great book. For the novice and the student, I can just imagine this book would be incomprehensible as a textbook. This book is also recommended to students taking a college course in robotics. Most robotics texts give you plenty of narrative on subjects such as the kalman filter or particle filter, but fail to deliver the goods on how to do it. This book gets you there. The product description does not list the table of contents, so I do that next. Note that I am reviewing the third edition, published in 2007.

Good text but expensive in the US.

This book is OK as a rather non-mathematical introduction to image processing at an advanced undergraduate level.
The "analog" approach to signal and image processing is not covered extensively. There is more emphasis on algorithmic aspects. Frequency analysis is kept to a minimum and one-dimensional signals such as speech are not covered extensively or at all, although some aspects of analog processing are more easily explained in a 1-D context.
Maybe just as well from an image analysis/computer vision standpoint. Indeed, many other textbooks exist with more emphasis on base functions and transforms (but then they are utterly lacking in the algorithmic approach).
More down to earth, though. I know that my students would be turned off by the US price of $115. Hardly appropriate for the less affluent student ! Especially since the UK Amazon price is £37. Same ISBN. Luckily, in Europe, we can order from the UK store.

Our goal is the worldwide everyday use of linear-elastic analysis, and dimensioning on basis of these elastic computations. We cover steel and concrete structures, though attention to structural concrete prevails. Structural engineers have access to powerful FEM packages and apply them intensively. Experience makes clear that often they do not understand the software that they are using. This book aims to be a bridge between the software world and structural engineering. Many problems are related to the correct input data and the proper interpretation and handling of output. The book is neither a text on the Finite Element Method, nor a user manual for the software packages. Rather it aims to be a guide to understanding and handling the results gained by such software. We purposely restrict ourselves to structure types which frequently occur in practise.

Structural engineers must translate elastic analysis results into economic structure dimensions and reinforcement, which raises difficulties. Not all engineers are well enough equipped for the increasingly easy-to-use powerful programs. The problem is not lack of FE-knowledge, but rather ignorance of plate behaviour. Therefore, this book starts with classical plate theory for membrane and bending states, and proceeds to FE-practice.

This volume can be used for university courses, serving as practical preparation for the engineering profession, and as a guide to structural designers.

Very enlightening

My only experience with autism is from what I've seen on TV and movies. Ms Jones does a superb job of explaining to the layman what everyone should know about people with autism. I recommend this book to all teachers so they not only have a better understanding of children in their classroom with autism, but a better understanding of how children treat each other and children of autism. It should be in every classroom around the world. I highly recommend everyone read this very enlightening and sometimes profound book.

Not easy to pin down... and that's good

When I first approached No You Don't, I wasn't sure what to expect. I've read a number of autism memoirs, novels about us, and monographs that purported to tell "the story" of our condition, both as research for my own books and as a way of attempting to understand myself and my relationship to society as a whole. In every case, I have found other autism books to be missing some key element of the discussion, either because they try too hard to generalize from a few anecdotes to an entire population or because they reinforce the just-so stories that explain away the diversity of Autistic experience by reinforcing stereotypes about us.

No You Don't cleverly avoids all of those things, and it does so without reveling in its own cleverness. Ms. Jones's series of essays are nuanced and detailed, and she is careful to highlight the ways in which her experience both does and does not reflect the conditions that other Autistics face. She discusses common problems without sweeping generalizations, confronts specific cases of abuse and brutality from her past, and narrates her path toward an understanding of her own situation with a disarming combination of humility and kindness that, in every case, thoroughly explained her perspective without dictating that others should automatically adopt it.

If I had to try to pin down No You Don't to a certain genre or format, I would say that it is a book of skeptical essays that does not shrink from the task of reviewing lived experience and empirical evidence and contrasting it sharply against armchair theories and public perceptions. It is not only that, though. It is also a primer on patience and understanding, and a thoroughly enjoyable lesson about the importance of knowing oneself instead of defining oneself by the expectations of others.

I come from a family that has a multi-generational history of neurodivergence. In one way or another, most of us have been touched by learning and developmental disabilities, neurological problems, and/or mental illness, and in Ms. Jones's essays I found not only echoes of myself, but of my mother, my sister, and my grandfather. It is a terribly important book, not just for people who are attempting to understand autism, but also for people who are feeling lost or alone due to any hidden disability, mental illness, or recent trauma. It is a book about hope that is not afraid to confront the darkness and name the shadows, and an object lesson in a market clogged with abstract morality tales.

I can not recommend it strongly enough.

If you are the parent of an autistic child, someone who works with autistic people, or an autistic person yourself, you absolutely must read this. This is the only thing I have ever read that even comes close to helping me understand an experience of autism. I have come to realize from reading this how I could have been (I'm not 100% sure) complicit in ostracizing my autistic classmates and community members. I have a sensory processing disorder and am socially awkward, but I am not autistic, so the perspective in this book was incredibly enlightening. I have come to understand now that in asserting my boundaries with an autistic person, I cannot be so aggressive; I also cannot assume that "common sense" means that everyone is on the same page as me.

I've recommended this book to every autistic person and anyone affiliated with them in my life. I recommend it to you, too. It is so important.
