As an artist and collector of books (such as Brian Frouds "Faeries") I have found this book a joy to own.
The illustrations are beautiful and the text informative.
It makes me want to own the original story-books the experts are taken from!
This book features work by such artists as: Aubrey Beardsley, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, Arthur Rackham and Kay Nielsen.
In Particular people interested in the Pre-Raphaelite movement would enjoy this book.
Quite a number of the illustrations are in colour.
The "Notes on Illustrators" at the back of the book gives a list of all the (known) books each artist has ever illustrated.
Useful indeed if you have a favourite artist you wish to track the works of.
I find this book one of my more prized books.
I would recommend it to any-one into art, illustration, Pre-Raphaelite style art, or old story books.

Loving Day: A Novel, by Mat Johnson

A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK | NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY MIAMI HERALD AND ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY San Francisco Chronicle • NPR • Men’s Journal • The Denver Post • Slate • The Kansas City Star • Time Out New York | From the author of the critically beloved Pym (“Imagine Kurt Vonnegut having a beer with Ralph Ellison and Jules Verne.”—Vanity Fair) comes a ruthlessly comic and moving tale of a man discovering a lost daughter, confronting an elusive ghost, and stumbling onto the possibility of utopia.

“In the ghetto there is a mansion, and it is my father’s house.”

Warren Duffy has returned to America for all the worst reasons: His marriage to a beautiful Welsh woman has come apart; his comics shop in Cardiff has failed; and his Irish American father has died, bequeathing to Warren his last possession, a roofless, half-renovated mansion in the heart of black Philadelphia. On his first night in his new home, Warren spies two figures outside in the grass. When he screws up the nerve to confront them, they disappear. The next day he encounters ghosts of a different kind: In the face of a teenage girl he meets at a comics convention he sees the mingled features of his white father and his black mother, both now dead. The girl, Tal, is his daughter, and she’s been raised to think she’s white.

Spinning from these revelations, Warren sets off to remake his life with a reluctant daughter he’s never known, in a haunted house with a history he knows too well. In their search for a new life, he and Tal struggle with ghosts, fall in with a utopian mixed-race cult, and ignite a riot on Loving Day, the unsung holiday for interracial lovers.

A frequently hilarious, surprisingly moving story about blacks and whites, fathers and daughters, the living and the dead, Loving Day celebrates the wonders of opposites bound in love.

Praise for Loving Day

“Incisive . . . razor-sharp . . . that rare mélange: cerebral comedy with pathos. The vitality of our narrator deserves much of the credit for that. He has the neurotic bawdiness of Philip Roth’s Alexander Portnoy; the keen, caustic eye of Bob Jones in Chester Himes’s If He Hollers Let Him Go; the existential insight of Ellison’s Invisible Man.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Exceptional . . . To say that Loving Day is a book about race is like saying Moby-Dick is a book about whales. . . . [Mat Johnson’s] unrelenting examination of blackness, whiteness and everything in between is handled with ruthless candor and riotous humor. . . . Even when the novel’s family strife and racial politics are at peak intensity, Johnson’s comic timing is impeccable.”—Los Angeles Times

“Johnson, at his best, is a powerful comic observer [and] a gifted writer, always worth reading on the topics of race and privilege.’”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times

“Hilarious and touching new novel about family, identity and what it means to truly love other people . . . The disasters make us who we are, and the results can sometimes be amazing—as amazing as this beautiful, triumphant miracle of a book.”—NPR

“Giddy, biting . . . ferocious . . . Grand metaphors, unsparing social commentary, sharp characters, and sharper humor help propel the book. . . . A welcome effort from a major talent.”—The Boston Globe

Even when the novel’s family strife and racial politics are at peak intensity, Johnson’s comic timing is impeccable. . . . While it’s tempting to call Johnson’s novel timely or even prescient, he clearly longs for a time when it can be called historical. Sadly, we’re not even close. Until we are able to have the kind of frank and open conversations about race that are commonplace in Loving Day but rare in the real world, the myth of a post-racial society will remain a comic book fantasy.”—Los Angeles Times

“The politics of his own racial mix is a topic [Johnson has] written about with discernment and a rumbling wit. . . . Loving Day is about being blackish in America, a subject about which Mr. Johnson has emerged as satirist, historian, spy, social media trickster (follow him on Twitter) and demon-fingered blues guitarist. . . . Johnson, at his best, is a powerful comic observer; his punches land. . . . [He’s] a gifted writer, always worth reading on the topics of race and privilege. . . . I loved and will never forget Warren’s definition of what a daughter is: ‘A man’s daughter is his heart. Just with feet, walking out in the world.’”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times

“Hilarious and touching new novel about family, identity and what it means to truly love other people . . . Johnson is one of the funniest writers in America. . . . [He] gets at the heart of what it means to be a person—and he does so with more skill, generosity and, yes, love, than just about anyone else writing fiction today. ‘Forgiveness comes later in life, after you’ve created enough disasters of your own,’ Warren observes toward the end of the novel. The disasters make us who we are, and the results can sometimes be amazing—as amazing as this beautiful, triumphant miracle of a book.”—NPR

“Giddy, biting . . . ferocious . . . Grand metaphors, unsparing social commentary, sharp characters, and sharper humor help propel the book. . . . Loving Day is a welcome effort from a major talent.”—The Boston Globe

“Writers who are as smart as Mat Johnson are rarely as funny, and those who are as funny are rarely as smart. He is unique, and simply must be read. Loving Day, a tender, ribald, fast-moving novel, is the perfect place to begin.”—Teju Cole, author of Open City

“Hilarious, sometimes discomforting, always brilliant, Loving Day tackles with heart and sly humor identity, family, and finding that elusive place where you belong. This is an awesome, viciously witty novel.”—Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist and An Untamed State

“Loving Day is wonderful satire, sharp and funny about so many contemporary themes and anxieties, including race, money, family, sex, and love. Mat Johnson has a deep comic gift, and his laughs always come with real thought and feeling.”—Sam Lipsyte, author of The Ask and The Fun Parts

“This is what happens when races mix: Mat Johnson. Not a soul or a post-soul is spared in his brilliant and hilarious satire of modern American tribalism.”—Danzy Senna, author of Caucasia

“Genius! Mat Johnson is hands-down one of my favorite novelists writing today. He writes about the difficult stuff—the stuff that matters—in the most humorous and heart-wrenching way. Loving Day is Johnson’s triumph and a reader’s great joy.”—Heidi Durrow, author of The Girl Who Fell From the Sky

“Since this is a book by Mat Johnson, one of the best American satirists since Mark Twain, I don’t have to tell you it’s as funny as it is smart. It’s the most poignant father/daughter story I’ve read in years.”—Emily Raboteau, author of Searching for Zion

From the Hardcover edition.

In the ghetto there is a mansion, and it is my father’s house. It sits on seven acres, surrounded by growling row homes, frozen in an architectural class war. Its expansive lawn is utterly useless, wild like it smokes its own grass and dreams of being a jungle. The street around it is even worse: littered with the disposables no one could bother to put in a can, the cars on their last American owner, the living dead roaming slow and steady to nowhere. And this damn house, which killed my father, is as big as it is old, decaying to gray pulp yet somehow still standing there, with its phallic white pillars and the intention of eternity. An eighteenth-century estate in the middle of the urban depression of Germantown. Before he died, my father bought the wreck at auction, planned on restoring it to its original state, just like he did for so many smaller houses in the neighborhood. Rescuing a slice of colonial history to sell it back to the city for a timeless American profit. His plan didn’t include being old, getting sick, or me having to come back to this country, to this city, to pick up his pieces. This house is a job for a legion, not one person. It would kill one person. It did—my father. I am one person now. My father’s house is on me. I see it from the back of the cab, up on its hill, rotting.

Donated by the Loudin family after the Depression, the mansion was used by the city as a museum until a fire that created repair costs beyond its means and interest. At one point in my life, decades before, I was a boy. As such, I knew this house. I used to ride the 23 trolley past its absurd presence and marvel at this artifact of rich white folks’ attempt at dynasty. A physical memory of historic Germantown’s pastoral roots, before the larger city of Philadelphia exploded past this location, propelled by the force of the industrial revolution. Most things from childhood get smaller with age, but Loudin Mansion towers, because now I have to take care of it. So I want to run. I sit passively in the taxi as I’m driven closer, but my thighs ache and my bowels are prepared to evacuate, and I want to open the door and run. I’ll run. I’ll run through North Philly if I have to, all the way downtown. Run along the highway back to the airport, then run away again from the whole damn country.

The white cabdriver makes no move to get out with me when he finally stops, just pops the trunk open with one button and with another relocks the doors after I open mine. That lock clicks hard. I’m on the street with my bags, and I can’t get back inside. I’m not white, but I can feel the eyes of the few people outside on me, people who must think that I am, because I look white, and as such what the hell am I doing here? This disconnect in my racial projection is one of the things I hate. It goes in a subcategory I call “America,” which has another subheading called “Philly.” I hate that because I know I’m black. My mother was black—that counts, no matter how pale and Irish my father was. So I shall not be rebuked. I will not be rejected. I want to run but I refuse to be run off.

A kid walks by, about seventeen, not much younger than I was when I escaped this neighborhood. He looks up, and as I lift my bags I give him the appropriate local response, an expression that says I’m having a bad life in general and a headache right now. Welcome home. There are blocks around here where you can be attacked for looking another man in the eyes, and other blocks where you can be assaulted for not giving the respect of eye contact. I could never figure it, which blocks were which, until I realized these were just the excuses of sociopaths. The sociopaths, that’s the real problem. The whole street demeanor is about pretending to be a sociopath as well, so that the real ones can’t find you.

When I get to the porch, the front door opens. I can hear it creak before I see someone emerging from behind its paint-cracked surface. Sirleaf Day is carpeted in cloth. He’s got a Kenyan dashiki, Sudanese mudcloth pants, and a little Ghanian kente hat. It’s like Africa finally united, but just in his wardrobe. Last time I saw him, he dressed the same, but he only had one leather medallion. Now he has enough to be the most decorated general in the Afrocentric army. I give him a “Howyadoin,” and the Philly salute, a hummingbird-like vibration of my forehead, the most defensive of nods. He gives me a hug. He hugs me like he knows I’m trying to get away.

“So you had your first divorce. That just means you a man now. Which kind was it? She stop loving you, or you stop loving her?”

“It wasn’t like that,” I tell him. Sirleaf grips me closer.

“Oh hell no. I hope it wasn’t one of those where you both still love each other, but it’s broke anyway. Those are the worst. My first, fourth marriages, they were like that. At least you didn’t have any kids with her.”

“Uncle Sirleaf, I really don’t want to talk about—”

“Don’t give me that ‘uncle’ mess. You’re too old for that shit. And I’m way too young,” he says, pushing me back for another look before pulling me in once more. “Your pop was waiting for you to come home, you know that? This house, it was going to be for you. You and your wife, your children. Bring you back to the community.” Sirleaf’s voice cracks with emotion. It makes me feel guilty for wanting to break free of his musky grasp. “And it did. You got to give that crazy honky that.”

I look over Sirleaf’s shoulder: there’s a rusty Folgers Coffee can sitting on the porch, by the wall. It’s there because my dad never smoked in a house. This can of ashes is full of cheap cigar butts, mixed with the cigarette butts of whoever visited. I know without looking inside it, because there was always a can like that on the porch of wherever my dad was living.

“He knew I wasn’t coming back. He was just going to fix it up to sell it, like he always did.” This gets him to release me, partially. He still holds my shoulders, pushes me back as far as he can to take a look at my face.

“Wasn’t his fault you ran off, was it? My daddy left me when I was four and gave me nothing but my stunning Yoruba features. So stop bitching.”

Sirleaf is a lawyer, a realtor, a griot, and a kook, and he’s good at all of those things. My dad was his white friend, because they had the kook thing in common. For three decades, they would get together to sell a property or drink whiskey and get kooky together. My dad had his own realtor’s license, but he wasn’t good with most types of humans. Sirleaf is the people’s man, knows everyone that matters in Germantown, from councilmen to people looking to buy their first homes. He speaks three languages: Street, Caucasian, and Brotherman.

Sirleaf’s getting old and finally he looks it. Some people age, and some just dehydrate. Sirleaf looks like someone let the water out and the creases dried in its absence. I can’t imagine how old my dad must have looked. They were the same age but my father was one of those pasty Irish people with no melanin to protect his skin from time. He could barely manage enough pigment for a mole.

“We should really have a funeral,” I tell him. “Or a memorial or—”

“He ain’t want one, and we’re going to respect that. You know your pop—he wasn’t one to spend good money on a bunch of bullshit. His legacy, it’s this house, this property. And it’s you. Now let’s look at your inheritance.”

With great flourish, Sirleaf turns back to open the front door. But it’s stuck. The wood’s swelled and it takes a lot to jar, a lot of effort to protect so little. Hell’s lobby waits on the other side. If my father’s soul is left in the physical world, it’s in the tools he left behind. Sandpaper, ladders, and scaffolding. Plaster and tarps, rollers and paint tins. At the back of my nose I can smell the Old Spice and Prell even though he hadn’t used either since I was eleven. I will be buried here too, I just know, and then I fight that thought with the words I have been thinking in the days leading up to this moment: paint and polish. Paint it, polish the wood floors, tidy up whatever basic visual problems might get in the way of a buyer’s imagination. Build on whatever my father managed in the months since he’d taken ownership. Use all the tricks he taught me. That’s what I thought, packing to come back Stateside; that’s what I thought waiting for the plane. That’s what I tell myself now. Paint and polish. I even say it out loud.

“There ain’t no roof,” Sirleaf says back to me. “Go on, take a look at that jawn. That shit’s crazy. The wiring in here is, like, seventy years old. And exposed—I seen that old fuse box in the back pop sparks twice in the last hour. It’s a miracle he didn’t burn the place down running his power tools. I don’t know how your pops lived up in this mess. Craig was one cheap bastard. No offense,” and he wags his head at the shame of it.

I don’t remind him about a childhood camped out in many a shelled home. My dad had been doing the same thing since my mother kicked him out, and that was twenty-seven years ago. I don’t tell him about pissing in paint buckets and dumping it out the window.

“You sure you want to sleep here? I mean, what about Tosha’s? They still in the house I sold them. Six bedrooms. Maybe you could stay there.”

“I’ll stop by, but I doubt her husband wants me under the same roof for an extended period.”

“Up to you, but I’m out of here. This place creeps me out. You better see what you’re dealing with on the second floor, before it gets dark. Power’s iffy up there.” He points to the stairs. I get the message that he wants me to go up. I also get the message that he’s afraid to. That at least he understands the limits of his age. As he leaves, Sirleaf stares at his feet with every step, as if he’s worried the old beams might give out on him.

“How soon can you get it listed?” I ask. He sighs. I’ve missed something.

“I told you. You can’t sell this place the way it is, not without taking a huge loss. You can’t sell it for the land; it’s historic so it’s hard to get permission to build on it. You going to have to pick up where your pop left off, and it’s going to take a while to get it together. At least, the basics. You got shoes to fill, boy,” he tells me. I just happen to look down when Sirleaf says it. His shoes have at least two-inch heels on them. He catches me staring and says, “I’m engaged to this new jawn: young sister. She likes me tall.”

“Sirleaf, look: I just got divorced. My comic-book shop, I had to sell it. I owe my ex half of that, but I’m still living off the money. Whatever we got to do, whatever we can get, let’s just get it soon, okay? I don’t care if we take a loss, I just want out.”

“Yeah. Sure. Right. You seeing the same house I’m seeing, are you not? I mean, take a look around,” he implores me. I don’t need to do that.

“My ex is a lawyer. A really, really, good one. And she’ll sue the living shit out of me if I don’t pay back the money I owe her. I’m already late on the payments. You read my emails, right? I need that cash, man.”

“Your ex isn’t an American citizen, so she can’t sue you here. I’m telling you, Warren, it might seem like a big deal to get sued, but that ain’t your major problem right now. You got other things to worry about,” and he lifts a mudcloth-adorned arm and motions in a slow sweep around the whole damned building.

Sirleaf is right: there is no roof. There are walls. It has floors. Just no real top. In my book, that barely qualifies it as a house, makes it more of a massive cup. I brave the stairs, shining a flashlight above me as I pace the hall of the second story. In most parts of the ceiling, there’s nothing but blue tarp separating the interior from the elements. There are a few charcoaled beams in those rooms where my father hadn’t knocked the remains of the fire damage down. In the master bedroom, there’s a green canvas tent, the old Coleman tent my dad used when he took me on trips to the Pine Barrens and the Appalachian Trail. Now its yellow plastic spikes are nailed directly into the blackened, fire-ravaged hardwood. Instead of camping out in the room of the house least damaged, as I would have done, as any normal person would have done, my father took up residence in a room that looks like a hollowed out piece of charcoal. There’s a tarp on the floor to match the one glimpsed through the burnt shingles above, but besides that, the space is nearly unprotected to the heavens. It’s the nineteenth of August, about 80 degrees outside and 90 in this room. The windows up here are covered with brown paper, taped to the glass, but the sun’s heat gets in anyway. This is the place he grew sick in. Made the decision to not go to the doctor in. Then died in. Quietly, of pneumonia. I always assumed he would die on the streets of Germantown itself, loud. Knocked over the head for being the wrong race in the wrong neighborhood in the wrong century.

In the gloom, I drag everything—the foldout table and chair, the lamp connected to the car battery, the propane grill, the five-gallon jugs of water, and eventually the tent itself—one by one downstairs to the dining hall, the least damaged room in the whole house. My father managed new drywall in here, matched and replaced sections of the crown molding, and had gotten as far as laying out cans of primer for painting. With the sliding doors to the hall closed, the room almost seems habitable.

Dissecting a Difficult Subject
By Audrey Thornton
I think Johnson's efforts were satisfactory given that race, class, and ethnicity are highly charged and very difficult subjects, especially in America. I am not a science friction fan, but i enjoyed the paranormal foundation of the story line. I read this work on kindle. It felt short for a novel. In my opinion i think it missed the five star mark in dialogue because there was less of it, rather too much in the protagonist's head. Also, there was a lot if walking away by his love interest rather than standing toe to toe and having meaningful dialogue.

What a Book Is and Is Not
By C. Cooper Floyd
I was pleasantly surprised by the meta-cognitive theme about labels. It is hard to categorize this book as any one thing: urban fiction? A tale of acceptance? Paranormal? Psychological? Sociological? Historical? Comedy? Tragedy? Yes. The identity of the book is as difficult to disassemble as the characters are themselves. And I think that is the point: that instead of trying to place any one person in a category--black, white, Latino, or Asian--we should try to take each person as an individual piece shaped by individual experience.

Bi-racial cacophony
By D. Stephens
This was a story, a meandering thought process that took the reader to a place where she had never been. The author explored the plight of the product of the union of African American and white people. Specifically, their quest to find an identity in a society where being black is defined as having "one drop" of blood from a black ancestor. It was complex and gave the reader an insight into the problems of a group of people not whose problems she had never thought about.

The Yearling, by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

Jody Baxter lives with his parents, Ora and Ezra "Penny" Baxter, in the animal-filled central Florida backwoods at the end of the 1800s. His parents had six other children prior to Jody, but they died in infancy which makes it difficult for Ma Baxter to bond with Jody. Jody loves the outdoors and loves his family. He has wanted a pet for as long as he can remember, yet his mother Ora says they only have enough food to feed themselves.

It has remained one of my favorite books, and I purchased this copy to include ...
By Thomas C., Martin
As a young boy growing up in Florida, I was quite aware of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings classic novel, lovingly written while she was residing at a tiny community in east central Florida, now just a few miles from where I write this, called "Cross Creek" which was the title of a second book she authored, and then her book of annotated "old Florida" recipes called, "Cross Creek Cookery." The epic film made of "The Yearling" premiered at the Florida Theater in Sarasota, near Myakka Park where many of the scenes were filmed, with actors including Gregory Peck starring in the role of young Jody's stern, pioneer father. It has remained one of my favorite books, and I purchased this copy to include the original illustrations. I purchased the book as a gift to the young daughter of an acquaintance, who embodies the spirit of Jody, who originated in the author's mind as a young girl, the gender changed at the suggestion of the publishers who saw more acceptance by the reading public if it were so. The book remains an American classic, and should be on any serious student's reading list. Cross Creek is still there, not much changed from the river side community deep in the pine and oak woods, but now only minutes from Florida Route 301, an area I chose for my retirement, not much changed from the very early years of pioneer Florida, the background for the book. The author lovingly describes every detail of the lush surroundings, the bird and animal life, the magnificent trees and flowers, the pioneer life. The house where the author stayed for a year while writing it, is still there, and is now part of a State Park, dedicated to her memory, at Cross Creek.

One of the finest novels ever written!
By Dan T
It is not hard to see why this modern masterpiece was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1939. It was made into a classic movie starring Gregory Peck as Penny Baxter and was illustrated by the legendary N.C. Wyeth. They would not have exhausted their immense talents on a mediocre book (as some of the reviews have expressed- were they reading the same book as me?).

The story is beautifully crafted and it flows effortlessly. The homespun language is quaint and is perfect for the book (which is set in the late 1800s). The author knew the intricacies of nature in Florida and described it with exactness and beauty. There are many sections of the book that are filled with warm humor and lightheartedness. The deep closeness between the father and son is touching as well as the love between the husband and wife.

Life was a tough struggle then and it is brought out with great skill. Rawlings was a master of timing and description.

(For those high school students who were forced to read the book- read it again in ten years. I felt the same way about "To Kill A Mockingbird". In high school I hated it. Later in life- I loved it. Maturity adds a lot to any book).

N.C. Wyeth's illustrations are perfect for the story. His use of strong directional lighting is fabulous. I would recommend the Scribner Classic (hardcover) with his illustrations in it.

Rawlings lived in the heart of the Florida woods in the winter time and was a keen observer of nature and men. I think I learned more about hunting from this book than from any other source.

Because this book lacks sex, extreme violence, aliens or risque humor- perhaps it might seem dull to some- but it is for those very reasons that I was enthralled with it. Imagine a book filled with brilliant writing, a complex plot which is weaved by a consummate artist and many secondary adventures all which fortify the plot and without one tinge of cussing!

This book deserves ten stars not five.

Life knocks a man down
By David Light
An incomparable story of growth and survival in the most difficult conditions. The Yearling, set in the scrubland of northern Florida a couple of decades after the Civil War, is the story of the Baxter family: little "Penny" Baxter, the father, a saintly figure who is wise, understanding, kind, brave, dutiful, stoic; Ory, the mother, whose essential goodness has been buried to some degree by endless toil and the death of several babies; and Jody, who is about 12 when the story begins, a good-natured sprite for whom nature is benevolent and everything is to be explored.

The Baxters live some 15 miles from the nearest town and four miles from their nearest neighbors, the Forresters, a family of massive sons who are variously good hearted and murderous drunks. In this environment, the little Baxter family scratches out its existence.

Two themes predominate: the loss of childhood innocence and Implacable Nature. The latter is depicted in a variety of ways: a legendary maurauding bear that is seemingly impossible to kill; a pack of hungry wolves several dozen strong; a flood that destroys everything in its path and leaves the plague in its wake; a terrible poisonous snake that threatens the life of one of the characters. In this unforgiving environment, Penny forges ahead at all times, hunting and farming to provide for his little brood, rarely at a loss despite the continual setbacks that afflict "Baxter's Island," the small territory that the family owns.

It's not all harshness, however. Moments of beauty break through at intervals, particularly when father and son are off on a leisurely hunt. There is often a great reverence shown for flowers, trees, waterways, birds, animals, and the landscape as a whole. A lovely character named Fodder-wing (of the Forrester clan) has a whole backwoods menagerie, one that young Jody would duplicate were it not for opposition from his mother, who knows all too well the trouble that animals can cause once they have grown to maturity.

The consolation prize for Jody is Flag, a fawn that he claims after its mother has been killed. Jody loves Flag as much as any 12-year-old boy in the world today loves his dog--much more, really, since it is the only thing in the world that is exclusively his.

Over the course of a year, Jody lives through all the terrors that nature--and, sometimes, man--can inflict and prepares, unknowingly, to eventually take over Penny's role as provider for the family. In the opening chapter, Jody has a particularly fine time off on his own, in the woods, and when it is over he cannot sleep because "a mark was on him from the day's delight, so that all his life, when April was a thin green and the flavor of rain was on his tongue, an old wound would throb and a nostalgia would fill him for something he could not quite remember." It is the last full day of his childhood innocence.

By the end, when events have taken their difficult course, it is Penny who must counsel Jody and explain how he wanted to spare Jody as long as he could from the rigors of adulthood. He explains, "A man's heart aches, seein' his young uns face the world. Knowin' they got to git their guts tore out, the way his was tore. I wanted to spare you, long as I could. I wanted you to frolic with your yearlin'." But, as he points out, life knocks you down, and when you get up, it knocks you down again. "What's he to do then? What's he to do when he gits knocked down? Why, take it for his share and go on." And Jody understands and takes up his new responsbility, to himself and to his family.

I haven't conveyed in this short review the brilliance of the descriptions of the landscape and all it contains, the richness of the many characters who populate the book, or the excitement of the twists and turns that befall the characters--but it's all there. I will close by saying that although The Yearling is catgorized as a sort of children's book, it is one that adult lovers of literature would enjoy; moreover, it would be difficult to read for those under the age of 15, I would think.

Also, for those considering reading this book to their children, as I just did, keep in mind that it's not for the squeamish. As Penny says, and as the book reveals, "You've seed how things goes in the world o' men. You've knowed men to be low-down and mean. You've seed ol' Death at his tricks. You've messed around with ol' Starvation. Ever' man wants life to be a fine thing, and a easy. 'Tis fine, boy, powerful fine, but 'tain't easy."

Larry Hama returns to his original series with all-new stories!
By Ernest Robertson
From 1982 to 1994 Larry Hama wrote the legendary "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero!" series published by Marvel. The series stopped with #155. (These issues are currently being reprinted in the "Classic G.I. Joe" trades by IDW.)

Fast-forward to May 2010. IDW released #155.5 as a freebie for "Free Comic Book Day." Here Larry Hama picked up the story right where he had left off over 15 years earlier. In July 2010 the series officially reopened with #156, and has been going strong with new monthly installments since. Same writer, same continuity, same issue numbering - this is the definitive continuation of the classic Marvel run!

This trade collects #155.5 thru #160, and is called "volume 1" because these are the first issues published by IDW that continue the original Marvel story.

The Joe team has been disbanded, and Cobra attempts to hunt some of the key members (Hawk, Duke, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Roadblock, Stalker, Mainframe, Rock N Roll) down. The Joes reunite and strike back. Great stuff!

I gave this volume 4 stars because #157 and #160 drag a little and the art isn't the best I've seen for G.I. Joe. I don't mean this as a slam against Augustin Padilla, but I just feel that his style isn't right for this genre. (However, starting in #161 SL Gallant took over the art chores and his work is PERFECT. His amazing work will be featured in the next trade, but sadly not in this one.) Despite my complaints this volume is over all a total blast to read. Nobody writes the Joes like Hama!

For #156 and forward each issue has been printed with three cover variations, one of them being a sketch by Larry Hama. (The Hama sketch covers are difficult to find.) This trade features an excellent cover gallery in the back where we get full page reproductions of all three covers for #156 - #160. Very cool - especially the Hama sketch covers.

To have Larry Hama back on his original Marvel story-line is a dream come true! YO JOE!

A refreshing update to a classic tale
By Eugene M. Roby
I have recently started to collect the classic GI Joe comics from the 1980's run. I recommend these stories to anyone reading this review. A year or two ago, IDW (the current publsher of the GI Joe comics) asked Larry Hama, the writer and part-time illustrator of the classic series, to come back and publish new stories set in the GI joe universe of the classic comics,as a result we got GI Joe a Real American Hero.

This is the first volume of this new series, and it kicks it off pretty well. After reading this volume I am going to be collecting them all as they come out.

In my opinion, GI Joe A Real American Hero, is the perfect blend of classic 1980's comic book writing and modern art. It is great to see a modern comic book story with all the classic Joes just the way I remember them when I was a kid.

I introduced my 11 year old son, to both the classic series, and this relaunch, and he likes the relaunch better. I think this new series does a great job of introducing GI Joe to a new generation, without compromising the integrity of these characters.

In short this series does a great job of bridging the gap between 1986 and 2012. For a GI Joe fan, this would be my recommendation, if you were limited to reading only one of the modern era GI Joe comics. Well, now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Yo Joe!

Maybe you can't go home again
By Kid Kyoto
I was over the moon when I heard that Larry Hama was returning to GI Joe and picking off exactly where he left off in the 1990s. His GI Joe run from the 80s and 90s is one of my favorites of all time and I've been enjoying the IDW reprints.

I know this opinion won't be popular but the first volume falls far short of the original run.

The premise is great, after Cobra stages terrorist attacks the U.S. declares martial law and hires 'security contractors' like Arbco Systems and Coordinated Order By Righteous Americans (one guess who they really are) to keep the peace. It's a brilliant combination of right wing and left wing paranoia and hands Cobra their greatest victory yet. Soon Cobra troopers in full uniform are shooting people in the streets.

But the execution is just sloppy. In the first few pages we have General Hawk shooting a policeman in the face. Sure he's a Cobra-controlled cop, but still it's a distasteful way to start. Later Roadblock hacks up several government agents (yeah, yeah, Cobra-loyal agents) with a meat cleaver. It's implied that Stalker tortured a Cobra trooper off-camera. Everything feels just too grim and dark, and not at all fun.

And then the interesting scenario is wrapped up in just a few pages with no real impact.

Agustin Padilla's art is also ill suited for Hama's usual stories. He often draws the Joes superhero-style standing in the open charging right into enemy fire. Other artists drew them more like real-world soldiers, taking cover, choosing their shots carefully. At no point does it feel like the Joes are in danger, their main complaint is running low on ammo.

If this was the only book I bought I would have dropped the series. Fortunately with book 2 things pick up nicely. Hama rediscovers his sense of humor, we see some of the gadgets and vehicles come back and the art improves nicely. Book 1 is not bad but really fell short of the original run.

Amazon.com Review
Larry McMurtry, in books like The Last Picture Show, has depicted the modern degeneration of the myth of the American West. The subject of Lonesome Dove, cowboys herding cattle on a great trail-drive, seems like the very stuff of that cliched myth, but McMurtry bravely tackles the task of creating meaningful literature out of it. At first the novel seems the kind of anti-mythic, anti-heroic story one might expect: the main protagonists are a drunken and inarticulate pair of former Texas Rangers turned horse rustlers. Yet when the trail begins, the story picks up an energy and a drive that makes heroes of these men. Their mission may be historically insignificant, or pointless--McMurtry is smart enough to address both possibilities--but there is an undoubted valor in their lives. The result is a historically aware, intelligent, romantic novel of the mythic west that won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

"A marvelous novel . . . moves with joyous energy . . . amply imagined and crisply, lovingly written. I haven't enjoyed a book more this year . . . a joyous epic."--Newsweek

Doesn't need another 5-star review, but here's one anyway...
By Jim Mitchell
A handful of entertainment works (books, movies, music, TV shows) have connected with me in ways that I can barely describe. They move me emotionally, they provoke my imagination, and they make me want to experience them over and over again. They describe people and situations to which I can completely relate. Bruce Springsteen's music does that for me. Star Wars used to do that until the prequels came about. The TV show St. Elsewhere used to do it (haven't seen it in years, but I assume it holds up). And Lonesome Dove continues to do so. There are so many positive reviews here that it's hard not to be redunant. I agree with it all: believable characters that you feel like you know, not long enough even at 900 pages, brutal but realistic violence. This is simply the best book I have ever read, and the emotional impact still rings true after nearly 16 years. I haven't reread it in several years, but I'm certain that I remember nearly every scene and much of the dialogue.
Several warnings:
1) Nothing you read afterwards, for years to come, will compare. Lonesome Dove will spoil you and diminish everything else you read, no matter how good it may be.
2) It really is not long enough even at it's sizable bulk. You will not want this to end. It starts slowly, but like the cattle drive it depicts, it builds momentum.
3) You will have a difficult time convincing anyone else to read this fine book. You'll hear several standard excuses, especially "I don't like Westerns" and "It's too long" (refer people who say this to my #2 warning above). I know few people who have ever read the book, but those of us who have share the same feelings. It's frustrating to read something so wonderful yet have so few people with whom to share it.
4) McMurtry's sequel and prequels are inferior. You will want more after reading this book, but his other works in the series do not live up to the standards set here. They are good works by themselves, but are inconsistent with the facts and spirit established in the original book. I've heard him speak at several book signings, and for reasons unknown he seems to hold Lonesome Dove in contempt. It has always struck me that he must have intentionally sabotaged the other books as a way of "sticking it" to the fans who inundate him with their love for this book. Don't let that diminish your enjoyment of Lonesome Dove.
5) It is emotionally devastating. This is a sad, brutal, tragic book (bet that really sells you on it, doesn't it? well, sad and brutal have never been done so well). You will experience the characters' joys, but you will also share their considerable pain. Do not let anyone tell you how this book ends. I was not expecting the outcome, but it flowed naturally with the story. Given its realism and insight into life and human nature, the book ended in the only way it could if it were to remain true to itself. Life doesn't end happily, and neither does Lonesome Dove. These characters, their stories and their fates, will haunt you until the end of your days.
When you're finished with the book, watch the movie- looking forward to seeing it should be some consolation after the letdown of finishing the book. Don't fall into the mentality that "the movie is never as good as the book". In this case it is, and they offer a wonderful complement to one another.

One word: magnificent
By Candace Scott
I have never been a fan of the literary western genre and confess that I read this book solely because I watched the movie based upon this book. Incredibly, the book supercedes the movie and McMurtry's characterization of Woodrow and Gus are truly stunning. It's the characters that turn this book into a compelling classic, rarely does the reader encounter such deftly-drawn and intriguing men as McCall and McCrae. You feel as if you are in Lonesome Dove with these men, and with them every step of the way from Texas to Montana. It's a magnificent journey and McMurtry is a superlative writer.
Even if you've never read a western book in your life, this is a literary masterpiece, the Shakespeare of the range, so to speak.

Tolstoy on the Range
By Ted Ficklen
Stay with me here. I'm serious. I think Lonesome Dove can standcomparison to Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. Of course, I've only read Tolstoy in translation, so chances are I've missed alot, but there is no question that McMurtry creates something here very close to that impossible dream: The Great American Novel. I dont know that any other American writer has ever suceeded on this scale, which is why I go to Tolstoy.
McMurtry uses the Western as a starting point, but there is a little of everything here. Surely there has never been another American Western with so many varied characters, both men and and women. McMurtry juggles many different points of view, but manages to give each of his characters a unique voice. Most remarkable of all, I think, are the women in the book, who manage to escape the usual stereotypes of madonna or whore, even though many of them are, quite literally, prostitutes.
Lonesome Dove is written in a deceptively simple, unpretentious style. I've just finished reading it for the second time. Despite its length it is really a fast read, since it is one of those books that demands to be taken with you where ever you go until you are done.

Differential Equations with Applications and Historical Notes, Third Edition (Textbooks in Mathematics), by George F. Simmons

Fads are as common in mathematics as in any other human activity, and it is always difficult to separate the enduring from the ephemeral in the achievements of one’s own time. An unfortunate effect of the predominance of fads is that if a student doesn’t learn about such worthwhile topics as the wave equation, Gauss’s hypergeometric function, the gamma function, and the basic problems of the calculus of variations―among others―as an undergraduate, then he/she is unlikely to do so later.

The natural place for an informal acquaintance with such ideas is a leisurely introductory course on differential equations. Specially designed for just such a course, Differential Equations with Applications and Historical Notes takes great pleasure in the journey into the world of differential equations and their wide range of applications. The author―a highly respected educator―advocates a careful approach, using explicit explanation to ensure students fully comprehend the subject matter.

With an emphasis on modeling and applications, the long-awaited Third Edition of this classic textbook presents a substantial new section on Gauss’s bell curve and improves coverage of Fourier analysis, numerical methods, and linear algebra. Relating the development of mathematics to human activity―i.e., identifying why and how mathematics is used―the text includes a wealth of unique examples and exercises, as well as the author’s distinctive historical notes, throughout. A solutions manual is available upon qualifying course adoption.

Trade Is War: The West's War Against the World, by Yash Tandon

Globalization has reduced many aspects of modern life to little more than commodities controlled by multinational corporations. Everything, from land and water to health and human rights, is today intimately linked to the issue of free trade. Conventional wisdom presents this development as benign, the sole path to progress.

Yash Tandon, drawing on decades of on-the-ground experience as a high level negotiator in bodies such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), here challenges this prevailing orthodoxy. He insists that, for the vast majority of people, and especially those in the poorer regions of the world, free trade not only hinders development – it visits relentless waves of violence and impoverishment on their lives.

Trade Is War shows how the WTO and the Economic Partnership Agreements like the EU-Africa EPA and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) are camouflaged in a rhetoric that hides their primary function as the servants of global business. Their actions are inflaming a crisis that extends beyond the realm of the economic, creating hot wars for markets and resources, fought between proxies in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and now even in Europe.

In these pages Tandon suggests an alternative vision to this devastation, one based on self-sustaining, non-violent communities engaging in trade based on the real value of goods and services and the introduction of alternative currencies.

This is a wonderful value filled book that helps you to feel much safer in your own house. It covers everything you are going to need from setting up trip wire to external deterrents. I know what it can feel like wondering if someone is going to break into your house and whether you will even be aware when they break in. That is where the knowledge found in this book comes in handy. After applying this knowledge you won't have to wonder anymore and you also will have everything set up to take care of any unwanted intruders.

SHORT on pages... LONG on information
By All my friends are writers
We live in a troubling and troubled world of natural disasters, vulnerability to intruders, looters, and criminals. Although each may conjure up feelings of being disillusioned with a society that no longer looks out for each other, it is heartwarming to see an author who sets out to provide information for taking a responsible and proactive stand to protect ourselves, our families, and our assets from the possibilities.

'Prepping: Booby Traps and Hunkering Down- Prep and Fortify Your Home With..." may seem a stretch in survivalism, but as the author notes, “Natural, social and economic disasters can lead to a scenario where your home, family, food and weapons can come under threat.” We must embrace that reality and consider the tips and tools covered in this book.

Starting with an assessment of when your home will be most vulnerable, and moving right along... to finding the tips, techniques and tools, and in many cases, the instructs on how to “build” the booby traps. I was impressed with the integrity of the author - noting some of the “deterrents” are not legal during peacetime, with the intention to make readers aware of what CAN be put in place should an extreme situation call for extreme protective measures.

I found the description about the safe room fascinating! Many things I would never have considered, and I have taken disaster training! A short read, for sure, but information that is important and to the point.

Practical yet simple
By Gray Adams
Definitely a book I want to have for the end of civilization as we know it. Practical yet simple, most everything you would need to know about booby traps and hunkering down.
When people think of "prepping" and "Preppers" they often get the mental image of crazy people with garages full of canned goods and a secret underground bunker in the back yard. This book is not about those people.
As someone that lives far from any major city I found the information in the book useful and helpful in putting together our own emergency plans about booby traps and hunkering down. If you want to know more about booby traps and hunkering down then this book may be the guide that you need.
