About the Author

The author, Gary Thorpe, has taught Environmental Science, Chemistry and Biology at both the high school and college level for most of his 35-year teaching career and has received numerous awards in teaching from county, state, and national organizations.
Having retired from teaching in 2008, Gary Thorpe who lives in the Los Angeles area with his wife, Patti, remains active by continually updating his environmental science products, RV'ing through the United States and visiting his two daughters, and continuing to work as a patrol officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, Hollywood Division.

Great study tool! But I would suggest using other materials as well as this to get a 5!

I took AP environmental science about a year ago and this book helped me get a five!
AP Environmental Science is (in my opinion) the hardest AP sciences because unlike chemistry, biology, or physics, environmental science encompasses everything that isn't chemistry, biology, or physics. That's a lot of material to learn over a short period of time! I used this book in addition to the AP Edition of Living in the Environment. For me the text book was good for learning about the subject while the Barron's book was easy to carry and use as an overview of the material. I also used it when I went on vacation before the exam and it was super helpful because it was easy to carry on and off the plain and it was good to use as a refresher to remember and review the material before the exam. I also liked how there were lots of space to write notes in the margins and the diagrams were also helpful.
I'm undecided on whether I would recommend this book to someone who was only taking the exam. I thought there was a lot of information in the book but it was more of an overview. To do well on the exam, you need to know a lot about all the different areas and have a true understanding of all of them. To do well on the test and only use this book, you'd need to read about all of the different subjects and use other materials like the ones from college board.
But overall, I would recommend this book to help taking an AP Environmental Science class and test. I actually gave my copy of my book to a friend who was a year younger than me. I also bought this book for my sister who's taking the class this year. She's already started using this book for her very long summer assignment and she's said that it has helped her already!

Great book! Could easily be used to teach this ...

Great book! Could easily be used to teach this course inside of a classroom. However I find it is actually more detailed then the actual test will be. The practice tests as far as multiple choice are great, however I would advise getting short answer practice off of the College Board Website.
